This place would be great if the bar staff weren't completely out of it. Decent atmosphere, but I was there for 45 minutes (sitting at the bar) and managed to order 1 beer. Would love to comment on the food, but I never got the chance to order any... Even though I asked for a food menu. Not a good impression.

When you go to Smokey Bones you expect the same menu options; the status quo BBQ with traditional sides and a full bar. This Smokey Bones in Johnson City, offers everything that a typical Smokey bones offers with he addition of great service and fresh food. Of all of the restaurants I've visited in this chain, this location was the cleanest and had the best tasting food. I sat at the bar and the young ladies who were serving the bar were friendly with all of the patrons and were even polite and professional to the creepy drink dudes hitting on them. The food was hit and fresh. I ordered the smoked turkey with sweet potato pies and Mac and cheese (it was a cheat meal, don't judge me!). The sweet potato fries were hands down the best I've ever had! Of course you can't go to Smokey Bones without ordering those delectable bag of doughnuts. Those things never disappoint!!!

So a friend recommended them and I laughed it off for quite awhile. Being a bit of a BBQ snob, I didn't think a chain would cut the proverbial mustard, Famous Dave's notwithstanding. Well, I was wrong. They have surprisingly good baby back ribs at this franchise. The bar at the Johnson City store is usually well attended. They have several TVs and a decent place to catch some games. The corn bread app is like cake. I mix up the hot bbq and the vinegar bbq sauces. Sides are decent, they usually overcook the broccoli and the slaw is sometimes soupy. I got a Bones Club account, with my name misspelled originally, then got a new one and had the damnedest time trying to get them merged. They email pretty often with one special or another, not too spammy just high volume messaging.

Since I'm reviewing another "chain" joint.I will make it short. The food has always been good. Not mind blowing, but good,decent,aw-ight kinda food.Service is good, hit or miss if you sit out in the dinning area's. But most of ya know where I'm sittin, and with that being said. They have a very nice bar,the staff is friendly and attentive.Decent selection of brew's. Good vibe and atmosphere.Definitely Sports bar theme goin on,especially since they have added a couple of pool tables and I think I saw a foosball table. Smokey Bones you're A-ok and I'm not sure if I'd say I'm a fan,but I'd do ya again.Well ya know what I mean :)

I've gone to Smokey Bones for years. It is a good place and 8 out of 10 times the food and service are excellent . The other times it is just meh. They have newer table top touch screens for calling your server or checking out, which is a cool feature and makes it nice if you are in a hurry. Watch out for game days, it can get packed!

I ate lunch here today, and while the food was OK it wasn't the best barbecue I've ever had. It was decent though, so I guess I'd go back if I were in the area and needed a barbecue fix. The restaurant itself was a nice clean place and our server was excellent. I didn't know it was a chain restaurant, but it doesn't appear to be one and that's a good thing. Overall, not a bad place.

There's several Smokey Bones in The South. Not all are created equal. While they all have similar menus, some are better than others. This one is in the middle of the pack. We liked the large bar area with a wide assortment of TVs to watch games. And, our server was awesome. The BBQ is slightly better than average. If you've been to Mac's in North Carolina it's a step below that and roughly two steps below Luella's in Ashville and likely a step below Jim N Nick's, and at par with Famous Dave's and Calhoun's. Keep in mind, I'm giving this rating based on the best BBQ spots in the east, not Johnson City alone. Meanwhile, if you're coming here with a family or to watch games the food is fine. I'd recommend ordering a combo where you can try a few meats and sides, rather than choosing one. This way, you can sample a few meats/turkey/sausage etc. If you're extra hungry my friends dig the pretzel bread and the skillet cornbread. Try it!

For a chain barbecue place, the food is surprisingly good with decent sized portions. There is not too much variety on the menu, but if you come just to get barbecue you should be fine. The prices are on the high side for what the food is.

In town for work two different times, and went to Smokey Bones both times! It was a late dinner both nights, and the fact that they serve food late brought me to the restaurant. The food was cooked great both times and relatively quick! The BBQ sauces tasted great as well. I enjoyed the sweeter tasting ones. Good vibe in the restaurant later at night, friendly staff, and clean restrooms. A couple of my buddies ordered wings and I insisted that I try them and I was happy I did. They smoke their wings to perfection! Great flavor and texture to them. Huge wings, so lots of meat from each individual wing. If I am in the area, I will go visit again!

Food is generally very underwhelming. I ordered ribs onmy last visit and they were not very good at all. Tough and chewy. Bar and table service can be very slow.

Going to keep this short. There was a large sign out front saying Lunch Specials $6. Came on a Monday and was disappointed to find that depending on the day, there were only 1 or 2 choices to choose from for the $6 "Special". On Monday, it was a Grilled Chicken Caesar Salad or a Potato and Salad. The Grilled Chicken Caesar salad .... sucked. Chicken was dry, the salad didn't taste fresh, and it was just... plain. it simply sucked.... The waiter came by and commented saying "how was it? I've been really wanting to try it one day" ok first... it does not look good nor does it taste great. Potato and Salad - pretty much a baked potato and a small caesar salad on the side. Nothing special. I'd recommend getting that over just a caesar salad. Yes, I went to Smokey Bones BBQ and Grill got got a salad... so this review doesn't pertain to their bbq. But if you have a lunch special... with just salad choices... wat do ya expect...

Had a GREAT server (Megan S) she made some great suggestions for our table (apps and such) Food (BBQ) was great, dessert great, Megan's GREAT attitude? GREAT! The server made the meal for our party! Thanks!

The 4-star update is for the improved service (different server) and those damn smoked wings. Those suckers are super-tasty! We also enjoyed the sweet potato fries and the West Coast Club.

Food was ok. Pretty good I guess. Our waiter was very friendly but spilled my son's beans on his hand and burned him. The beer was flat but they replaced it. A complimentary dessert was given.

I signed up for an account just to write this review. In one word, AVOID. I just left this restaurant. And all I need to say is that I was served RAW chicken tenders. Literally the outside 2-3 mm was cooked and the inner 2 inch thickness of each finger was completely raw. Disgusting and dangerous. The manager was apologetic and took care of our meal but this issue goes beyond service. This is a serious health hazard. I would give anything if I had taken a picture for evidence but I was too disgusted to think of it. Beyond that, I should say that we waited at least 40 minutes to get our food, after which I was brought the wrong entree TWICE before they brought the correct, if uncooked, one. I'm sure they rushed my order because they already screwed it up but I wouldn't go near a place that takes this kind of shortcut with their food and my health.
